10 T. butter (1 1/4 sticks)
4 T. confectioners sugar
1 T. ice water and 1 T. vanilla extract OR 2 T. brandy
1 c. nuts, finely chopped walnuts or pecans work best
2 c. sifted flour

extra confectioners sugar for tossing with warm cookies

  1. Heat oven to 350° F.
  2. Cream butter and sugar until pale and fluffy
  3. Add other ingredients slowly, one at a time
  4. Beat well
  5. Roll into long thin sausage about the diameter of a cocktail frankfurter
  6. Cut dough into 1" pieces using a sharp knife
  7. Place little rolls about 1 1/2" apart on an ungreased baking sheet
  8. Bake in the middle of the oven about 15 - 20 minutes the bottoms are very slightly golden brown
  9. While still warm, roll in confectioners sugar
