1 c. sugar
peel of one orange
1 large egg yolk
1 c. butter at room temperature
1/2 t. nutmeg
1 c. flour
1 c. cake flour
1/4 c. poppy seeds

  1. Heat oven to 350° F.
  2. Combine sugar and orange in food processor using steel knife. Mince finely
  3. Add egg yolk and mix one minute
  4. Add butter and nutmeg, mix til light and fluffy - 1 - 2 minutes
  5. Add remaining ingredients
  6. Mix using on/off about 4 - 5 turns. Do not over process
  7. Divide dough into four equal portions
  8. Form into long rolls about 1" in diamter and 4" long
  9. Wrap in plastic wrap or aluminum foil and chill until firm, at least one hour
  10. Cut dough into 1/4" slices using a sharp knife
  11. Place slices about 1 1/2" apart on an ungreased baking sheet
  12. Bake in the middle of the oven about 8 minutes until the bottoms or edges are very slightly golden brown
  13. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely

Makes about 5 dozen cookies.

Dough cylinders freeze well and can be cut when slightly defrosted and baked for about the same 8 minutes.
